PREVENTION RESOURCES

Many suicides are preventable. There is a part of suicidal people that wants to live; there is another part that wants to die because they are in pain and cannot see another solution to their situation. Most suicidal people give warning signals of their suicidal intentions, but those in close contact are often unaware of the significance of these warnings or unsure what to do about them.

Suicide prevention services provide education about suicide, including risk factors, warning signs and the availability of help.

POSTVENTION RESOURCES

Suicide is as much a prelude as it is an ending. In the United States, more than 31,000 people die from suicide each year. The impact results in about 300,000 new mourners each year (not including colleagues and friends) who are "frozen" in their grief because suicide is a dreaded and forbidden topic. After the suicide of a loved one, survivors suffer in three ways: (1) they suffer the loss of the person who died; (2) they suffer from the trauma of the circumstance of death; and (3) they suffer from the silence that surrounds the death.

Postvention services provide support and healing for suicidally bereaved individuals. Individual grief counseling and loss-specific bereavement support groups enable survivors to go on living. Most importantly, "postvention is prevention for the next decade and for the next generation" (from Silent Grief, Living in the Wake of Suicide, p. 209).
